Reunions

Reunion 2017

Greeting to my fellow USS Brownson Shipmates. To those who attended the reunion in Maine, it was great to reconnect with each of you. To those who were unable to attend, please know you were missed. You missed a great gathering but it is my hope you will be able to attend the next USS Brownson reunion to be held in Virginia Beach, VA in 2019

I would like to thank the Linscotts for all their hard work as they planned and executed a phenomenal reunion for us. Portland Maine is beautiful and the Linscott’s attentio n to detail, allowed us to enjoy some of the best Maine has to offer, has provided Sharon and me with more wonderful Brownson memories. Still, the best part of the reunion is reconnecting with friends because that is what you have all become. You are so much more than just former shipmates.

Reunion Report

WOW, In Charleston two years ago Joni and I decided to host the 2017 reunion back in South Portland, Maine. We have been in the planning mode for two years. Lots of planning and leg work. I only visited the one hotel, The Merry Manor Inn. Don, the manager of the Inn gave me everything I asked for and welcomed us back with open arms! Joni kept me focused taking care of all the registration forms, expenses, communications with Ben Glasser along with any appointments I had set up with outside venders. Could not have done this without her dedication to our association. She is my “ROCK”.

Our two trips were both greatly received by all in attendance, and from the feedback we have been receiving, thank you notes, along with personal calls gave Joni and I an outstanding feeling of success.

To all, we thank you for the gift certificate to our favorite restaurant in the area “Dimillo’s Floating Rest.”

Trip one, Bath Iron Works on the Kennebec river, gave us a sample of life on and around the river as well the history of ship building over the years. A great view of the shipyard and the work being done for our Navy and a view of another ZUMWALT class destroyer along with latest ARLEIGH BURKE class destroyer. How about the photo comparison of the Zumwalt to the Brownson that the BIW provided as well as the museum. A stop in Freeport for lunch and a little shopping at LL Beans and on to the world’s largest globe of the world.

Trip two, The Down East Lobster Bake! Back by popular demand. Great job by the Foster Company once again. Music and sing along and how about Tom our entertainer. With lots of laughs and a great gathering of shipmates along with their mates. Then off to a tour along the southern Maine coast, Walkers Point (home of the Bush’s estate) and the Monastery. Some of you got a chance to put your feet in the nice cool North Atlantic Ocean.

Saturday, the ladies were treated to a morning of Sea Glass Jewelry by Kate Clark. The men held their general meeting along with the election of officers for the up coming two years. President, Tom Holcomb, VP, Joe Sanders, Sect’y, Lyle Staley, Treasurer/Membership, Ben Glasser. Thank you gentlemen for your service to our association!

A vote was taken for the next location for our reunion in 2019 and was given to Tom Holcomb and his wife Sharon to meet once again in Virginia Beach, VA. Thank you Tom and Sharon, let us know if we can help in anyway.

At 1700 we gathered for photos around the pool, by nights end photo’s were given out with a big thank you for your service by Mr. Keith Nuki the photographer, if anyone would like a copy or a 8 X 10 you may contact him at Bay Imaging. We hope all enjoyed our guest speaker at the banquet, Captain Russell Webster USCG Ret. How about that Silent Auction! WOW, the best we’ve ever had!! Thanks to all those that donated items for the auction and all for your participation, could not have happened without your help.

Joni and I want to thank everyone that has made this such a great reunion, the volunteers that helped in any way, thank you-thank you. I think we made more then $1200.00 for our general fund. I think the total attendees was 80, about three days prior we were close to 90 but due to medical reasons had a few cancellations. Joni and I want everyone to know that it was a great pleasure to host this reunion and an honor to welcome you to the great state of Maine.

God Bless you all, and God willing and we all being able, hope to see you in Virginia Beach in 2019.
