Introduction
Hi, it's me again. As usual, it's been longer than I planned but hopefully, worth the wait. We got lots of new stuff for you this issue. If you haven't already seen it you might want to check out the reunion page. We're starting to get some details and will be adding more in the near future.
I received a letter from Charles Taliaferro telling me about an organization called the Kitchen Table Gang which provides hospitalized veterans with magazines, newspapers, playing cards, greeting cards, "Care Packages," etc. It sounds like a really good cause. You can visit them at www.kitchentablegang.org
As is usually the case, a number of emails sent to members bounced due to bad addresses. In particular, all "@home" email addresses are now invalid due to the provider going out of business. If you know of anyone who has changed their address recently, have them contact me with a new address.
New Brownson Memorabilia
Since the last newsletter we have received photos and other memorabilia from the following Brownson shipmates:
- Thomas McCray - lots of photos from the late 60's. It's a big download but worth the wait.
- Thomas "Popeye" Ramey - a couple of additions to his page
- Bob Linley - another new page. This one from the early 60's
- New contributions on the "Various" page from "Popeye" Ramey (a terrific reunion photo), Bob Devon and Kerry Elkins; and more ship's patch facts from Dick Uronis and Kelly Rettig
Website Changes
You may or may not have noticed, but there have been some behind-the-scenes changes to the website. First, I've added a "News" section which permits me to add information regarding changes to the site without actually editing the web page. This is done with a thing called "Blogger". Using Blogger, I can actually email changes to the site from any computer. It's not a major change, but it makes it a lot easier for me to post news items.
The major change has been to the roster. It is now stored on the web in a central database. By accessing the database, any information in the roster can be searched, sorted, and printed in reports which will all be referenced to a single source. If you haven't tried it out, go to the roster page and kick the tires. The database is still in the developmental stages. At the present time you can only search by last name. Eventually, you'll be able to search by other parameters, such as years served. I'd be interested in hearing any feedback you may have on the database.
New Registrations
The following have registered with the website since the past newsletter. For full information, go to the roster database
- Marvin G. Wilsey (ET1), marvie7@usamedia.tv
- Norman Patten Jr. (RM2), ncpjr@optonline.net
Email Address Changes
The following addresses have been updated since the last newsletter:
- Roy Hauck (PNSN), changed to zandoz@attbi.com
- Ed Lynch (IC2), changed to elynch@cox.net
Paul Serabian has established an email address for questions about the 2003 reunion. We'll be posting information as it becomes available but in the meantime, send your questions to Brownson2003@worldnet.att.net
Departed shipmates
Since our last newsletter, we have lost 2 shipmates.
- Robert L. Olson, ET2, '52-54, departed 11/01/01
- Charles W. Roll, GMC, '49-53, departed 12/13/01
Our deepest sympathy their families and friends.
Contribute to the Memorabilia Collection
We would love to have you make a contribution to our growing collection of memorabilia. We can accept just about any form of electronic media. Ideally, photos should be scanned at 200-300 dpi, saved in jpeg format and zipped in a compressed file but just about anything will do. Winzip (www.winzip.com) is about the best compression program and is pretty easy to use. If you would prefer to send actual materials please me first.
That's about it for now. Talk to you next issue.
